Enlightened Quotes

“I would define a ‘true sage’ conceptually as a human organism in which the sense of separation as the author of their actions is gone. It is a human being for whom the belief – and it is a false belief – that they are the centers of the universe, the authors of their thoughts and their feelings and their actions – that belief is absent in a True Sage. And this is not a belief on the part of the human organism that they are not the authors of their action, it is the absence of the belief that they are. So it is not the presence of the belief that they are not, but the absence of the belief that they are. There are a lot of people running around with the belief that they are not the authors of their action and that belief is simply another belief.”

For enlightenment to happen the perceiver must turn right around and wake up to the fact that he is face to face with his own nature – that HE IS IT. The spiritual seeker ultimately finds that he was already at the destination, that he himself IS what he had been seeking and he was in fact already home.

…”The perception here is that there are two distinctly different kinds of communication about the nature of enlightenment. One is personal and the other is impersonal. The first offers the seeking “person” help and direction to find something called enlightenment. The second offers the “person” nothing. The first comes in many forms and has a wide following because it seems to respond to the “person’s” needs. The second is unfamiliar and energetically confronting.”

…”The world is not an inherently dangerous place but it IS inherently changeable. Which is to say that security is fleeting. Security is the illusion that the comfort I have now won’t change. I am secure in my job means I won’t be fired. I am secure in my relationship means it is going to last forever. A deep part of us knows that such feelings are built on an insubstantial foundation. Our projections of the future are fantasies. We have been wrong before and we will likely be wrong again. Of course, we have been right a few times too…so there is always hope!”

“…Willpower should be understood to be the strength of the mind, which makes it capable of meeting success or failure with equanimity.  It is not synonymous with certain success.  Why should one’s attempts always be attended by success?  Success breeds arrogance and man’s spiritual progress is thus arrested.  Failure, on the other hand, is beneficial, inasmuch as it opens his eyes to his limitations and prepares him to surrender himself.  Self surrender is synonymous with eternal happiness.”
 ~Ramana Maharshi

_____

“… The Self never undergoes change; the intellect never possesses consciousness.  But when one sees all this world, he is deluded into thinking, “ I am the seer, I am the knower.”  Mistaking one’s Self for the individual entity, one is overcome with fear.  If one knows oneself not as the individual but as the supreme Self, one becomes free from fear.

“The entire universe is truly the Self.  There exists nothing at all other than the Self.  The enlightened person sees everything in the world as his own Self, just as one views earthenware jars and pots as nothing but clay.”
~Shankara

_____

“When we talk about settling the world’s problems, we’re barking up the wrong tree. The world is perfect. It’s a mess. It has always been a mess. We are not going to change it. Our job is to straighten out our own lives.”
~Joseph Campbell

_____

“When you say, “I am happy”, you are not happy, because in this moment you have created a state of happiness. When you are actually happy, you don’t think of saying “I am happy”, because in that moment of happiness there is not a knower of the happiness, and you are in your glory, your wholeness, your globality.”
~Jean Klein ‘Open to the Unknown’

_____

“It is less what one is that should matter, than what one is not. To acquire knowledge should not be our first aim, but rather to rid ourselves of ignorance – which is false knowledge. The qualities we possess should never be a matter for satisfaction, but the qualities we have discarded. ”
~Wei Wu Wei ‘Fingers Pointing Towards The Moon’

“We are One not two.  We are that which is dreaming the dream and that which is the dream. We are whole together and not to be separated; for neither Is To Be without the other.  When we know this divine marriage of Oneness the dreamer has awakened to Self!

Knowing all that we are can be an awakening at a new level.  When Higher Self awakens to itself it becomes eternal.  The material and immaterial become One i.e. the internal with the external or inside with the outside.  All are One and the same and all are eternally infinite.  This then is Infinite Living!”

There Is Only One

I do not hold any one teaching or group to be “the” truth… for Truth is about Knowing the Whole of Everything.

Third Eye by Sheilan

The non-duality understanding of Oneness has always existed.  The Vedic word for Oneness is Advaita and translated means ‘not two’.  It is derived from the Upanishads, which are thought to be the final commentaries and interpretations of the ancient, Vedic texts.  Vedas means ‘Knowledge’.  Many believe the ancient Vedic scriptures have also existed since the beginning of history. These ancient scriptures were written down by sages over a period time, between 1500 BCE and 500 BCE.  It is said, that prior to this time, the teaching of Knowledge was given orally from one person to another.

The word Upanishad means “sitting down near”, implying sitting at the feet of the one with Knowledge and is the basis for the relationship between teacher and student and ‘the spoken word’.  ‘The spoken word’ is a way of transmitting and pointing to, that which cannot be spoken.  The ultimate lesson of Advaita Knowledge is beyond the realm of conceptual thought and form.  This non-thing or void that will always remain wordless is True reality and at a certain stage in our perception, it is seen as the only thing that exists as Real. All else seeming to be separately real is but a Dream!  From this ultimate perception, individuals and separation do not exist.  The separate self is an illusion, a lie, the Dream. It is the ego in each of us, which believes itself to be separate, with individual power to create and choose.  The ego is the Dream self and does not realize itself to be a fictional character of the Dreamer.  Self Realization happens when Oneness awakens from the Dream into the knowledge of it’s True Self.  Waking up from the Dream is not something an individual ego can control or make happen faster or even happen at all, because again, in Truth, there are no individuals with individual power.

Advaita thought is an essential pointer to understanding Reality beyond the words and concepts.  India may be credited to having the oldest and most doctrines, as well as teachers teaching Advaita concepts, Ramana Maharshi being the most famous, but the essence of this understanding is universal and can be found at the root of all myths and religions of the world.  Through out time there have been teachers emerging with various degrees of this understanding.  Joseph Campbell, in his 1988 ‘Power of Myth’ series, was able to explain this transcendent understanding to a western audience, on national TV.  It seems that this was the beginning for our western culture, to collectively, go deeper into the knowledge of this Ultimate Understanding, allowing for more acceptance and diversity among us.

We come out of Oneness to explore Self… we awaken and see our separation is a dream… We return back to One…   We are Infinity… we are All that exists.

Self-Realization vs. Law of Attraction!

Sri Ramana Maharshi

Many have asked me what I think about the book or movie ‘The Secret’ and The Law of Attraction.  For those of you unfamiliar with what this is, it is the notion that it is our birthright to have abundantly whatever we desire in regards to relationship, career, money, health, and spirituality.  The concept is we attract everything to us with our positive and negative thoughts.

From my perspective, there are many levels of understanding Reality.  There is nothing wrong with thinking positively and using the concepts of the ‘Law of Attraction’ to create what you desire if this be your destiny.  This may be your lifetime to explore such concepts. The thing I wish to share at this time is this: if you seek Self Realization, than the concepts of The Secret and The Law of Attraction will not take you very far and you will stay lost in the Dream. The path of Self Realization ultimately leads to a diminishing of the ego in order to Realize all physicality is illusionary.  The ego’s desire to have and control leads to more desire rather than egolessness in order to Realize Self.

The Law of Attraction supports the notion that the ego/mind is who we are and has the power to control life.  This level of Reality sees the Universe as a giant replicator like in Star Trek, which can make all your desires come true if you can keep your mind focused on what you want.  As I stated, there is nothing wrong with this perspective (or any perspective for that matter), except that it will leave you empty if you hunger for Knowledge of True Self.  The path to Self Realization is about ‘waking-up’ and realizing that the individual self is a Dream.  It is not about living in a Heaven where we receive everything we want via our thoughts, although that would be a lot of fun, but not what the earth school is about!  Knowledge brings True freedom.  Good and bad to the Self-Realized being is relative.  For a Self-Realized being, the ego and its desires and attachments have been diminished, so only True Self is seen.  A sage lives in mental stillness and does not have unconscious thoughts nor give much power to thoughts… there is harmony with their thoughts.  The sage does not have goals or desires towards success.  The drive to become somebody special is not there for it is understood they already are Source or Oneness, which is supreme.

Ramana Maharshi is thought to be one of the greatest sages of our time.  His teachings illuminated the dark and inspired many great teachers and thinkers. After seeing the illusion, Ramana was content to wear only the traditional Indian diaper and have a simple life.  Ramana decided he wanted to live in a cave in the meditative state of samadhi for many years.  When he decided to do something else instead of living in a cave in the state of Samadhi and came out earlier than planed, the person who was assigned to watch over his body during this time, sued him for breech of agreement!  Ramana died from cancer when he was seventy-one because there was no desire to fight the disease.  Ramana completely accepted his death. His simple life does not look masterful or abundant from the Law of Attraction perspective.  Seekers of light, who saw him and his light, only saw awakened Consciousness.  They cared not about his diaper, poorness or ill health. There are many misconceptions to what awakened or enlightenment is, but one thing I can say is: it is not about mastering and controlling your thoughts to manifest your desires.  Enlightened or awakened means the ego, desires and attachments have been diminished along with worldly goals and notions of success.

From my perception, each soul is given exactly what they need emotionally and materially to evolve.  The difficult challenges, as well as the so-called easy stuff is all destined and necessary for the soul to have the experiences for growth.  There are no mistakes in life.  If we practice moment-to-moment awareness and grow through the lessons we are given we will become more and more fulfilled from the inside and will no longer look for fulfillment outside of us.  We will be given what is ours to have materially and emotionally when it is our time to have it.  Life is a very unique path for each soul.
