Self-Realization vs. Law of Attraction!

Sri Ramana Maharshi

Many have asked me what I think about the book or movie ‘The Secret’ and The Law of Attraction.  For those of you unfamiliar with what this is, it is the notion that it is our birthright to have abundantly whatever we desire in regards to relationship, career, money, health, and spirituality.  The concept is we attract everything to us with our positive and negative thoughts.

From my perspective, there are many levels of understanding Reality.  There is nothing wrong with thinking positively and using the concepts of the ‘Law of Attraction’ to create what you desire if this be your destiny.  This may be your lifetime to explore such concepts. The thing I wish to share at this time is this: if you seek Self Realization, than the concepts of The Secret and The Law of Attraction will not take you very far and you will stay lost in the Dream. The path of Self Realization ultimately leads to a diminishing of the ego in order to Realize all physicality is illusionary.  The ego’s desire to have and control leads to more desire rather than egolessness in order to Realize Self.

The Law of Attraction supports the notion that the ego/mind is who we are and has the power to control life.  This level of Reality sees the Universe as a giant replicator like in Star Trek, which can make all your desires come true if you can keep your mind focused on what you want.  As I stated, there is nothing wrong with this perspective (or any perspective for that matter), except that it will leave you empty if you hunger for Knowledge of True Self.  The path to Self Realization is about ‘waking-up’ and realizing that the individual self is a Dream.  It is not about living in a Heaven where we receive everything we want via our thoughts, although that would be a lot of fun, but not what the earth school is about!  Knowledge brings True freedom.  Good and bad to the Self-Realized being is relative.  For a Self-Realized being, the ego and its desires and attachments have been diminished, so only True Self is seen.  A sage lives in mental stillness and does not have unconscious thoughts nor give much power to thoughts… there is harmony with their thoughts.  The sage does not have goals or desires towards success.  The drive to become somebody special is not there for it is understood they already are Source or Oneness, which is supreme.

Ramana Maharshi is thought to be one of the greatest sages of our time.  His teachings illuminated the dark and inspired many great teachers and thinkers. After seeing the illusion, Ramana was content to wear only the traditional Indian diaper and have a simple life.  Ramana decided he wanted to live in a cave in the meditative state of samadhi for many years.  When he decided to do something else instead of living in a cave in the state of Samadhi and came out earlier than planed, the person who was assigned to watch over his body during this time, sued him for breech of agreement!  Ramana died from cancer when he was seventy-one because there was no desire to fight the disease.  Ramana completely accepted his death. His simple life does not look masterful or abundant from the Law of Attraction perspective.  Seekers of light, who saw him and his light, only saw awakened Consciousness.  They cared not about his diaper, poorness or ill health. There are many misconceptions to what awakened or enlightenment is, but one thing I can say is: it is not about mastering and controlling your thoughts to manifest your desires.  Enlightened or awakened means the ego, desires and attachments have been diminished along with worldly goals and notions of success.

From my perception, each soul is given exactly what they need emotionally and materially to evolve.  The difficult challenges, as well as the so-called easy stuff is all destined and necessary for the soul to have the experiences for growth.  There are no mistakes in life.  If we practice moment-to-moment awareness and grow through the lessons we are given we will become more and more fulfilled from the inside and will no longer look for fulfillment outside of us.  We will be given what is ours to have materially and emotionally when it is our time to have it.  Life is a very unique path for each soul.

OH NO! The Sky is falling…

Acceptance is the key to life’s challenges, the “ups and downs’ of life… Having the sky fall is simply a tool for soul growth and cosmic evolution to take place.

Oh no the sky is falling! It was only a matter of time people began to realize the depth to which we are self destructing as a civilization.  For many of us the sky fell a long time ago and it was the beginning of our journey seeking for something Real.  At some point the cosmic rug was bound to get pulled out from everyone else and the fall-out to be fatal.  Because we are at the end of a cosmic cycle we are witnessing extreme duality on every level of life and society.  There is no real security in this world and the security we try to hold onto is illusionary.  We must be willing to look behind the curtain, like in the movie The Wizard Of OZ, to see The Great Oz is an illusion and can’t save us and get us home to where we want to be.  The True comfort and security we seek can only be found inside our own self.

From my perspective, this life is a dream… kind of like a movie.  It is a fantasy held together by smoke and mirrors.  Most of the players are are not aware of the dream and believe the characters and the stage sets are real.   In this country, many are filled with endless ego desires.  They indulge themselves on every level possible. They desperately try to fill up their empty lives with all kinds of stuff, so they can’t see the dream.  This keeps them from asking the essential questions of who am I and what is this life about?  When our lives are filled to the brim with accumulating and consuming and bulling each other, who has time to look deeper and to question what is real?

Sleepwalkers sometimes walk into walls and fall down stairs.  This may wake them up, but it will not keep them from sleepwalking again. It is the same for all of us.  Only awakening one moment is not enough to keep us awake for the rest of our lives.  We need to walk into walls, the sky needs to fall and the rug needs to be pulled out from under us, over and over again, until our egos become small enough for us to even minutely see the Dream.  The more aware and awake we are the more we become grounded in True understanding of what is Real.  Having True understanding that Consciousness is all there is is like having “The Ruby Slippers” to protect us from the The Wicked Witch of ups and downs.

The evolutionary journey out of the One and back to the One is Consciousness Awakening to itself.  Having the sky fall is simply a tool for soul growth and cosmic evolution to happen.  Suffering is never very pretty and can seem very tragic.  My heart goes out to all who are going thru such things.  I have had my share of suffering from cosmic rugs being pulled out from under me in a myriad of ways and as a result, I have awakened to clearly see the Dream.  When I began to accept physical reality to be a Dream, I began to let go of my attachments to it.  Life got easier as I accepted the ups and downs as part of the destined journey of my soul and just part of script of the movie… the dream.

There is a famous old Taoist story I really like called “We’ll See”.   It is a good example of seeing the dream.

There is an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically.

“We’ll see,” the farmer replied.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses.

“How wonderful,” the neighbors exclaimed.

“We’ll see,” replied the old man.

The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune.

“We’ll see,” answered the farmer.

The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son’s leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.

“We’ll see,” said the farmer!

And the story continues on and on…

Yes our world is about change and it can either be a scary story where we get lost in what is happening or it can be a joyful journey because we know what is Real.  So “Get Real”… slow down, keep it simple, let go and let flow!  Live the ‘now’… from moment to moment and there will be no room for mind/ego to attach itself.  Real change comes from within.  Have patience!

Peace be with you,

Life’s Challenges

Water Abstract by Sheilan

Challenge, or opposing forces, is part of being alive.  The perspective that we hold when the challenges arise will help us to either ride the wave or drown beneath it.  If we hold or practice holding, a more awakened perspective that all is as it should be, the waves will appear less dramatic and allow for a more graceful ride through the soul’s destined life.  When we find ourselves drowning beneath the waves, we need to reach out for a lifeline, so we can transcend from identifying with the ‘me’ or body/ego personality who is drowning, to True Self or our Higher Self, who is the Eternal Cosmic Surfer and rider of waves. The lifeline to True Self can be as simple as a walk in nature, inspirational words or deep meditation and prayer. Let yourself be guided to the way that will work best for you to connect and shift into the infinite.  The Infinite is everywhere and is everything, so the ways to get there are unique and infinitely varied!

Let go and feel the emotion and move through it.  If we hold the perspective that whatever is happening is wrong and should not be happening we will torture ourselves and continue the spiral downward, all the while wondering why we are being challenged and how it could have been prevented.  We are conditioned to blame ourselves or someone else for what is happening, rather than accepting the happening as part of life’s perfection and needs to be happening for soul/Higher Self’s growth.

What would life be if we accepted what happened as necessary, so destiny could continue to unfold as it is meant to?  In other words, we would live more fully from the perception of our Higher Self, seeing life as perfect the way it is in every moment.  This perspective does not need to stop us from making choices and taking action, but will bring us a deeper peace and clarity from which action can spring forth.

If we ride above the waves we will keep from getting battered, swallowing water, being confused and not flowing and enjoying the ride of life.  I wish for you all a more graceful ride through the big waves.

Truth and Acceptance

Life can seem uncertain and disconcerting with its constant change and unknown factors. During these times of extremes of economy, racial and religious fighting and natural disasters one can only wonder if the earth will ever know true peace? Perhaps it is more about individual peace first and always than collective peace. Might peace be a position of accepting “what is” from one moment to the next and allowing life to be as it is without judging it as good or bad? What is the source for this insightful understanding, which helps one to be so allowing? Perhaps it is the Source itself moving within you and without you… the thing that is constant and has no beginning and no end.

There is something that is alive everywhere, so much so, that it can seem hidden from view. Some call this thing Consciousness or Source or God. It peers out from all eyes, seeing and sensing, breathing all breaths, thinking all thoughts and speaking all words. When we become quiet we can dissolve into the stillness to know it is us. Do you think peace can be found any other way? There is refuge in that which is infinite.

May we be accepting of all things, and realize that which is the Source this thing we call our life.
